The latest State campaign, titled “IT’S NOT YOUR dog’s fault, it’s yours,” urges dog owners to improve control over their pets.

Minister Heather Humphreys announced this initiative, emphasizing the importance of responsible ownership for public safety. Increased fines and investments in dog pounds aim to address rising dog attacks, particularly on children. Last year, fines for poor dog control were raised to €300, and €2 million was allocated for dog pounds.

The minister aims to raise awareness nationwide, highlighting the risks posed by unleashed dogs to people, livestock, and other animals. Minister Charlie McConalogue supports these measures, stressing the need for responsible ownership discussions and the prevention of dog attacks.

Additionally, a dedicated Dog Control Stakeholder Group, led by retired Deputy Garda Commissioner John Twomey, will review policies on dog control and breeding restrictions.
